CIVITAS Project

The consortium formed by VIÑA COSTEIRA, S.C.G., ECOCELTA GALICIA, S.L., FAUNA ÚTIL S.L. and SOLTEC INGENIEROS, S.L. has received support under the NEXOS 2025 programme, promoted by the Galician Innovation Agency (GAIN), for the development of the CIVITAS project: Comprehensive Circularity in Vineyards – Nature, Technology and Sustainability.

The CIVITAS project is an initiative aimed at transforming the wine sector’s production model through the development of a circular, integrated and resilient viticulture system.

Focused on Galician vineyards, this model synergistically combines advanced technologies and nature-based solutions to address the challenges of climate change and resource efficiency. Its innovation lines include: advanced regenerative agriculture through smart grazing and intercropping; agrivoltaic systems to improve water and energy efficiency; a modular biorefinery for the full valorisation of vineyard by-products; the development of biopesticides and biofertilisers from bioactive compounds; and advanced digitalisation through digital twins and artificial intelligence.

The main objective is to research, develop and validate highly applicable scientific and technological solutions for the integrated and circular management of Galician vineyards.

The project seeks to achieve a significant reduction in carbon footprint, attain vineyard energy self-sufficiency, optimise water and fertiliser use, and enhance biodiversity and soil health. To this end, it integrates intelligent agrivoltaic systems, regenerative agriculture practices, biotechnologies for by-product valorisation, and advanced sensing technologies combined with predictive digital models.

During its implementation, the project will investigate the optimisation of cover crops and digitally monitored regenerative grazing, deploy agrivoltaic solar infrastructures with water harvesting and microclimate management capabilities, develop advanced vermicomposting and bioaugmentation processes to produce intelligent biofertilisers, formulate natural plant protection bioproducts from intercropping biomass, and implement an integrated digital platform powered by artificial intelligence and digital twins to support real-time decision-making.

The collaboration between Viña Costeira, Soltec, Fauna Útil and Ecocelta ensures scientific robustness, technological implementation capacity, and the future commercial exploitation of the project results.
